Five essential things you must have in your car

1. A digital tire inflator with an LED flashlight that plugs into your car outlet. Just set the PSI and turn the thing on

Amazon Includes attachments for blowing up balls, air mattresses, and anything else your inflating needs require, it’s also especially useful to buy for your first car. Promising review: “I was panicked when I went to my car the other night and had a flat tire. I had no idea how to change my tire, as my husband always takes care of stuff like that. Luckily a passerby had a small tire inflator, like this one, in his car. We inflated my tire and I was able to get home safely. The next day I got on Amazon and ordered this one. I immediately tested it and it worked great. It appears to be very well-made and comes in a very nice bag that I tucked away in the back storage compartment. Hopefully, I won’t have to use it any time soon, but if I have another flat tire, this time, I’ll be prepared…” —McintireP Get it from Amazon for $29.99 (available in three colors and for 5% off when coupon is applied before checkout).

All-door lock

On your door are usually two buttons, one of which looks like an unlocked padlock and the other of which looks like a locked padlock. This will lock and unlock all the doors at once. If you are driving and you feel unsafe in a particularly neighbourhood you can use this button to lock all the doors. Some cars do this automatically at speeds above walking speed.

First Aid Kit

Keep first-aid essentials in your car — including spare medications if you need them — to make sure you can stay alert while you’re waiting. Brush up on your first-aid skills so you’re ready if the situation calls for something more than a bandage. Find a first aid kit at Amazon.

20. A digital tire pressure gauge for checking the PSI on your wheels to keep them in peak road-ready condition (and make them last longer). Works on truck, motorcycle, bicycle tires too

Amazon Promising review: “This pressure gauge was a bit more expensive then what I’d like to pay. However, it definitely came in handy at night when I needed to check my tires. The blue light makes the process so much easier to find the stud that sticks out of your tires and check your tire pressure. The device also allows your to switch between pressure units (I just use the psi). So far I’ve had this product for six months and haven’t need to change to the battery or any problems. I recommend this product.” —Annie Get it from Amazon for $11.99+ (available in three colors).

Fog lights

If it’s foggy you wouldn’t use your fuFog lights are usually operated by a separate switch or dial. Not all cars have them; it tends to be European cars. The usual configuration is two low headlights at the front and one red rear light. The red rear light is much brighter than the usual rear lights and is about the same intensity as brake lights. For this reason it shouldn’t be used when it’s not foggy because it can confuse (and dazzle) drivers.

If it’s foggy you wouldn’t use your full-beam headlights because the fog will reflect the light back at you making it more difficult to see.

Today’s cars have become very reliable. Even then, one small mistake like leaving your cabin light on or forgetting your headlamp on could lead you with a drained battery. In those cases, it is very easy to use another can and jump start yours. In most cases, a jump start is sufficient enough to get the car on and keep it moving.

Lube Your Door Locks

You probably don’t use your door and trunk locks much if you have remote keyless entry, but that’s no reason to ignore them. If you don’t keep the lock cylinders lubricated, they’ll corrode, making it impossible for you to use your key. If your key fob battery ever dies, you’ll be locked out and have to call a locksmith.

Lubricating door and trunk lock cylinders is easy. Putting graphite lock lubricant into the keyway works well, as long as you don’t overdo it. Dry Teflon spray lube is another option. Shake the spray can to distribute the Teflon and shoot the liquid into the lock cylinder. The solvent will dissolve any sticky parts. Once the solvent evaporates, the internal lock parts will be coated in Teflon particles, allowing the lock to operate smoothly.

Insurance documents

It is great that you renewed your policy just before the monsoons, so you are covered. But it’s essential to keep these car insurance papers in your car or have a copy on your phone/ e-mail. For example, if your car breaks down or there’s an accident. In this case, you could take the vehicle straight to the mechanic or service center.

And you really don’t want to go back all the way to your home or office to pick up these papers!

Personal Products

I grab a small zip-top bag and pack it with personal care products. Just in case I get stranded overnight unexpectedly.

  • Deodorant
  • Extra pair of underwear
  • Basic makeup, like mascara, powder, and lipgloss
  • Travel roll of toilet paper
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Contact holder + contact solution
  • *Lady* products
  • Travel toothbrush + paste
  • Dental floss or pics

Winter Accessories to Have on Hand

While not essential, there are numerous other items that might be worth keeping around just in case. You never know what might be useful, so here are the top things that online driver reviews suggest you keep around:

  • Things to keep your car clean, such as paper towels in case of a spill, windshield washer fluid, or even some polish
  • In winter, it definitely helps to keep a blanket or jacket in the car, and a foldable shovel might come in handy if you ever find yourself snowed in
  • Similarly, if a sudden downpour should hit, you’ll thank yourself for packing an umbrella or a raincoat
  • Some emergency food supplies might come in handy if you break down overnight. High-calorie food that provides a lot of energy is your best bet, but be sure to pack some bottles of water, too.

First Aid Supplies

You won’t always have the luxury of being able to seek medical attention from a qualified doctor when you hurt yourself out on the road. Thus, it is imperative that you maintain a well-stocked first aid kit. Here are the important things to keep in your car first aid kit at all times:

  • Bandages – both triangular and crepe rolled
  • Plasters in various shapes and sizes
  • Gauze dressing
  • Antiseptic spray and cream
  • Antihistamine medication
  • Painkillers such as aspirin or paracetamol
  • Disinfectant hand wipes
  • Distilled water
  • Disposable sterile gloves
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Safety pins
  • Any important allergy or chronic medications you require

Power bank and torch

Thank God for the invention of the power bank. You can now charge your mobile phone anywhere and everywhere. For instance, you were stranded for hours and passed time playing a few games on your mobile. And you didn’t realize your battery is low. Your phone may switch off due to low battery.

Thanks to the power bank, you can quickly recharge the same and stay connected with your family and friends. Most smartphones feature an inbuilt torch, but you must keep one in the car too. If you need to get out in the rain, and it’s too dark, a flashlight is a better option. After all, you don’t want your phone to get spoilt in the water.

Keeping these 5 things in your car can be handy on a bad rainy day. It will save you a lot of hassle, ensuring your safety to keep you going.
