Firm mattresses are available in different thicknesses. Usually, you will be able to choose from 6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch sizes.

What Are The Features You Must Look For While Buying A Firm Mattress?

A mattress is a large investment, and with tons of new mattress models from ever-growing number of manufacturers, it’s important to do a research. Users who aren’t familiar with the jargon, materials and firmness grading, must inspect the vital features while buying a mattress.

Material & Construction

Among the popular options, innerspring support cores exist in the majority of mattresses. Innerspring systems comprise steel springs, or coils, uniformly placed all through the core for finest, reliable support. Coil count is tied to lifespan. Mattresses with an elevated coil count are more resilient.

The softness or firmness of a latex foam mattress is tested using a measurement called impression load deflection (ILD). ILD is the amount of force required to compress latex by 25% of the entire width, it’s expressed in numerals. High ILD ratings denote the latex is firm, while small ILD ratings specify the latex is soft. In genuine latex mattresses, comfort layer has a low ILD foam while support core has a high ILD. ILD rating of a mattress support core might range from 14 to about 44 on high end.

Polyfoam is classified on two measures: density and compressive modulus. Density is object’s mass’s by volume; this indicates how much compression a mattress handles, which relates to firmness and durability. Compression modulus means ratio of stress to strain for objects, and determines how much compression is required before a foam’s structure is lastingly compromised. What’s the Difference Between a Firm and Medium Mattress?

Mattress firmness is ranked on a scale of 1 to 10—with 1 being the softest comfort level and 10 being the firmest.

A medium mattress is a 5 on the firmness scale. These beds are soft to the touch, respond quickly to pressure, and are less likely to have excessive sinking than a soft bed.

A firm mattress typically rates between 8 and 10 on the firmness scale. These beds have less give and offer a more stable, even sleeping surface with very little sinking.

Of course, the type of mattress you have can also impact the firmness. Memory foam mattresses are available in a wide range of comfort levels. So, these beds can accommodate several different support needs. Latex beds have a firmer feel, so these mattresses tend to have a medium-firm comfort level—between medium and firm on the firmness scale.

Hybrid mattresses can feature either memory foam or latex foam in their top layer. So, it is helpful to understand the firmness of the foam being used. Plus, the overall feel of a hybrid will depend on the type of spring coils used in the base.

Innerspring mattresses are often classified as medium-firm to firm. These beds have a thin comfort layer and a thicker spring coil base, so they offer very little contouring and pressure relief.

Who Shouldn’t Get a Hard Bed?

Naturally, some people wouldn’t prefer a particularly hard bed. Those of you who like sleeping on your sides probably wouldn’t appreciate the extra firmness. The reasons are numerous.

Right off the bat, the very first thing that you should consider is that while sleeping on your side, you exert a lot more pressure on a concentrated surface on the mattress. That’s why sinkage can be a lot more pronounced. If the bed doesn’t contour your body and sink appropriately, you can start experiencing pain in your shoulders and lower back. People who are light regarding weight should also stay away from hard beds. The reason is quite simple – they wouldn’t be able to exert enough pressure on the bed to sink and would likely float on top of it. This is a rather unpleasant sensation that can also cause a lot of issues.

Cons of a Soft Mattress

While soft mattresses are known for their cradling, for some, the cradling can be too much and get uncomfortable. Let’s dive into some drawbacks you may face when using a soft mattress.

Back and stomach sleepers need a sturdy, even surface to prevent their bodies from sinking. So, if back and stomach sleepers use too soft of mattresses for long periods, they can eventually develop chronic low back pain and make sleeping difficult.

On some soft mattresses, heavier adults are prone to sinking too much and feeling trapped in their bed. Soft mattresses aren’t always supportive enough to bolster a heavier person, potentially causing pain and making it hard for them to shift in bed.

Mattress May Feel Unbalanced for Couples

Some softer mattresses aren’t as sufficient at isolating motion as firm mattresses. This won’t matter if you sleep alone, but for couples, motion isolation is an important consideration before choosing a mattress.

If one person is heavier than the other, they’ll sink further into the mattress, potentially causing the other person’s surface to become uneven. The uneven surface can feel awkward and cause pressure points and pain. Typically, medium mattresses are best for couples because they offer a balance of cushioning and support.

  1. Get a proper mattresses

The main key to having a successful night is sleeping on a comfortable and hypoallergenic mattress with a supportive pillow. Remember that any mattress that is too old, too firm or too saggy will make your body parts sore and make you to toss and turn all night.

Drawbacks of a Firm Mattress

If you sleep on your side, a firm mattress could cause pressure to build-up near the heaviest parts of the body—the hips and shoulders. When side sleeping, a firm mattress will also offer very little sinking, which could force the spine to curve.

Those who have arthritis need a mattress that will promote a neutral spine to relieve muscle tension. However, if the bed doesn’t cradle the pressure points, it could result in pressure build-up and exacerbate pain.

What Is Luxury Firm?

Understanding mattress firmness options can be difficult when new terms come into play. And Luxury Firm is one of them.

But how does a Luxury Firm mattress actually feel, you may ask?

Well, to tell the truth, it depends on the manufacturer. Companies can label their mattresses Luxury Firm but may use different materials and constructions to achieve a certain feel. That’s why two Luxury Firm models from two different mattress companies aren’t likely to feel the same.

However, when manufacturers call their mattresses Luxury Firm, they are all trying to offer a specific comfort level. Typically, Luxury Firm mattresses are supposed to deliver a moderate amount of contouring while maintaining firm support. Basically, a Luxury Firm mattress is usually a firm model with some padding on top (often designed as a pillow-top).

Luxury Firm vs Plush Firm

Let me warn you right away: when you look at the Luxury Firm vs Plush Firm mattresses, you will hardly find any differences. These are just two slightly different names that manufacturers use to describe a specific type of mattresses – not too firm, not too soft. As I’ve said before, these mattresses typically have a sturdy support layer (hence the Firm in the name) and some extra padding on top for added plushness (that “Luxury” component).

When shopping for a new mattress, you may also stumble across models labeled Cushion Firm. 

Naturally, you would think: what makes it stand out from the rest of the Firm models?

The answer is quite simple: if you check the comparison Cushion Firm vs Luxury Firm, you will be likely to discover the same comfort levels. Cushion Firm is just another name manufacturers use to describe firmer mattresses that feature some extra padding. It’s safe to say that all these names are just a technicality, as they are used to label pretty much the same mattress firmness level.

How to Choose Your Mattress Firmness

Now that you’re equipped with all the know-how you could ever want on different firmness levels, let’s apply it to a real world buying experience. Below, I’m going to run through some of the tips and tricks I use to pair folks with their ideal firmness level.

  1. What position do you sleep in? Above all else, this is probably the most important question to answer when considering firmness. Strict side sleepers will typically want something within the 3-6/10 range while back sleepers will want to go with something in the 5-7/10 range. And, of course, anything above a 7/10 will provide adequate support to stomach sleepers!
  2. How much do you weigh? Weight can also be a major factor. Heavier individuals will generally want a thicker mattress that provides plenty of foam layers to press into for deep compression support. Innerspring mattresses may also provide more durability to these sleepers. Heavier folks may experience mattresses as softer than those of more average weight, so if a reviewer (like me!) gives a mattress a firmness rating of 7/10, these folks might experience it as a 5.5 or 6/10.
  3. What’s your body type? Thinking about your specific body type will also help determine the firmness level you need. If you have a heavier midsection, you’ll want a firm mattress with a zoned support core to keep your spinal alignment neutral. If you’re a lighter sleeper, you’ll interact mostly with the top layers of your mattress, so may prefer a softer mattress that provides plenty of comfort.
  4. Remember: Firmness isn’t Support. Don’t forget that support and firmness are not the same. You can find a mattress with great support that’s still soft and meets all of your pressure relief needs!
  5. Still stumped? Go with the majority. If you still have no idea what firmness you should go with after reading through this guide, I recommend choosing a medium firm mattress. A bed that hovers around the industry standard medium firmness rating of 6.5/10 can often provide universal comfort for most sleepers.
  6. Be careful with soft mattresses. Oftentimes, sleepers see the word “soft” and naturally gravitate towards it. This makes sense — softness seems to indicate coziness or luxurious plushness. However, soft mattresses can often become quite uncomfortable because they don’t provide adequate support for many sleeping positions. In fact, “soft mattresses” are among some of the most returned mattress types in the industry. So, if you want to go soft, please make sure that your bed has a solid core of either high-density poly foam or pocketed coils. This will also increase the lifespan of your mattress!

Is It Better To Sleep On A Hard Or Soft Mattress?

This depends on your individual sleeping needs. Specifically, your weight, comfort preference and whether or not you suffer from back pain. Heavier sleepers may feel more comfortable on a firmer mattress as it will feel softer. Whereas, lighter people may find a firm sleep surface uncomfortable on pressure points. However, what it really comes down to is personal preference! Let’s take a look at some different sleeping issues and which firmness is best;

Firm or Soft Mattress for Side Sleepers?

If you sleep on your side, your shoulders, hips and ankles are pressed against the mattress for extended periods of time. This can become uncomfortable on firmer mattresses. A soft or medium soft mattress is better suited to side sleepers as it will cushion joints and allow you to sink softly into your mattress.

Firm or Soft Mattress for Stomach Sleepers?

Sleeping on your front can put a strain on your lower back without the proper support. Overly soft mattresses that allow you to sink deeper aren’t usually the best option for front sleepers as they exaggerate the arch in the spine. Instead, a medium or medium firm mattress works well for most stomach sleepers.

Back pain can really affect your sleep. If you suffer from back pain, a medium firm to firm mattress could provide long-term relief as it offers optimum support and promotes healthy spine alignment.

The right firmness level during pregnancy is largely down to personal preference, however, sleeping on your side whilst pregnant is widely considered a safe and comfortable sleeping position. For this reason, a softer mattress will help provide cushioning around pressure points.

What’s a Soft Mattress?

On the mattress firmness scale, soft mattresses are roughly between a 2 to 3. A soft bed is highly responsive and easily conforms under a sleeper’s body.

What’s unique to soft mattresses is their thick comfort layer made from materials such as memory foam or latex. The mattresses are usually about 12 to 14 inches thick, while the comfort layers are at least 2 to 4 inches thick.

Who is a Firm Mattress Best For?

Comfort is subjective, so there are no black-and-white rules about who should buy a firm mattress. Every sleeper should opt for the best fit for their needs and preferences. That said, there are general tendencies in terms of which people get the most benefit out of a firm bed.

Two major factors that play into the optimal firmness level are body weight and primary sleeping position. People who weigh over 230 pounds often prefer a firmer mattress because it keeps them from sinking too deeply into the bed, which can harm spinal alignment and cause overheating.

Back and stomach sleepers usually need a firmer feel to keep their abdomen and lumbar area from hyperextending, which can lead to lower back aches and pains.

While there are exceptions, the table below provides an outline of the top mattress firmness level based on a person’s weight and main sleeping position.

A person’s preferred sleeping position is closely tied to their ideal mattress firmness.

  • Side sleepers can struggle with a mattress that is too firm because it can generate an uncomfortable impact at their main pressure points like the hips and shoulders. This is especially true for people under 130 pounds.
  • Back sleepers generally benefit from a firmer mattress that keeps their midsection from sagging into a U-shape that can strain the lower back.
  • Stomach sleepers have similar support needs as back sleepers but often prefer an even firmer bed so that it doesn’t feel as though they are being suffocated or swallowed by their mattress.
  • Combination sleepers, who move between positions during the night, can appreciate a firm mattress if they spend more time on their back or stomach. A firmer bed can also prevent feeling stuck in the mattress, making it easier to adjust positions during the night.
