People used to go by the rule that a liter of water weighed a kilogram. Simple, huh? The beauty of the metric system is in its tidiness: 1cm³ of water is 1ml, and weighs 1g. So 1L of water (1000ml) weighs 1kg (1000g).

Atmospheric Pressure and Gravity

If you are on the moon with a gallon of water, it will feel much lighter than you being on Earth. Similarly on a larger planet like Jupiter where gravitational pull is stronger, a gallon of water will be much heavier.

  • On mountains which are obviously away from the core, gravity is weaker.

Effects of Water Temperature on Weight

Temperature is one of the ways to measure the amount of energy in water. A higher temperature means higher energy and vice versa. Higher water energy causes water molecules to vibrate, pushing their neighbors to the side. Thus, the density of water decreases with the increase in energy of water. Since a gallon is a set amount of space, the number of water molecules in that space will fluctuate with the changing energy levels. So, a gallon of warm water weighs slightly less than a gallon of cold water with the difference depending on the temperatures in question. For instance, at 500 Fahrenheit, a gallon of water would weigh approximately 8.3 pounds while at 2000 Fahrenheit a gallon of the same water would weigh 8.03 pounds. However, the value of water remains the same despite the temperature changes since the temperature does not affect the composition of water.

Does the elevation of my house affect the weight of water?

Since weight is a property that is related to a specific mass within a gravitational field the greater the distance a mass travels from the source of the field the less effect the field has on the mass. The reduction would continue as the distance increases until the mass, although still the same will weigh nothing.

Apparently, the distances that water can be taken to a higher elevation on earth does show a reduction in weight that can be measured, however not necessarily felt.

I wonder if this is true since every week, I visit the store to buy 55 gallons of drinking water in gallon containers. This task calls for the water to be handled and moved a lot of times.

  2. Unload it at the checkout
  3. Load it back into the trolley
  4. Transfer it into my car to drive to my mountain home
  5. Unload it from my car and carry into my utility room

In order to convert Gallon into liters, the following are the formulae for both US and Imperial gallon.

For US standard

 Volume in Liters = (volume in gal) x (3.785 L/gal)

For imperial gallon

Volume in Liters = (volume in gal) x (4.5460 L/gal)

Now we can easily convert this into weight as for water 1 liter ≈ 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs.

4.546 × 1 =  4.546 kg

3.785 × 2.2 = 8.327 pounds
