Organize Bookmarks in Chrome Using Folders

Google Chrome browser allows creating folders based on your preference. You can move all your bookmarks to folders and access them easily. Follow the steps below to create folders and organize bookmarks in Google Chrome on your PC or Mac.

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.
  2. Click the three-dots icon (three lines icon for Mac) at the top right corner.
  3. Go to Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager.
  4. From the window, right-click anywhere and choose “Add New Folder.”
  5. This will create a new folder under the “Bookmarks Bar” directory.
  6. From the left pane, go to any folder to see the bookmarks saved.
  7. Drag and drop bookmarks to any folder to organize them the way you want.
  8. You can also drag and drop the folders within another folder.
  9. Close the tab when you are done.

After creating folders, you can move your saved bookmarks into them, to access easily. Plus, when you bookmark a page, you can choose the folder to move the bookmark directly into them.

For a better view, you can choose to sort bookmarks by name as well.

Google Chrome’s bookmark manager is an awesome feature that makes managing bookmarks incredibly easy. Chrome has a lot of other cool bookmarking features too! One of our favorites is the ability to bookmark all open tabs at once.

7. Backup your bookmarks

Chrome will let you save as many bookmarks as you want. Anecdotally, once you get up into the thousands, they can seem to act a little strangely, but there’s no number limit.

That doesn’t mean that things you bookmarked five years ago are still relevant now. But you might find you want them in a week, or a year. Research materials, suites of specialized tools for particular tasks, or just an online reading list you’re struggling to catch up on could all fit this bill.

If this is you, consider backing up your Chrome bookmarks. You can export bookmarks as an HTML file to your computer, then re-import them when you need them again.

To do this, go to the Chrome menu and select Bookmarks, click Bookmark Manager and then select the vertical dot menu in the top right-hand corner of the Bookmarks Manager window.

Find a bookmark

Important: The easiest way to open a bookmark is to click on it in the Bookmarks bar. To turn the bookmark bar on or off, click More If you don’t have the bookmarks bar turned on, the Bookmarks Bookmarks Show bookmarks bar Show bookmarks bar.

If you don’t have the bookmarks bar turned on, there are 2 ways to find your bookmarks: 

From the menu:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More Click a bookmark. Bookmarks Bookmarks.
  3. Click a bookmark.

From the navigation panel:

  1. At the top right of your browser, click Side panel Click Bookmarks..
  2. Click Bookmarks.

  2. At the top right, click More To the right of a bookmark, click the Down arrow  Bookmarks  Bookmark Manager Bookmarks Bookmark Manager.
  3. To the right of a bookmark, click the Down arrow Edit Edit.

Important: After you delete a bookmark, you can’t get it back. On your computer, open Chrome. At the top right, click More Bookmarks Bookmark Manager. To the right of a bookmark, click the Down arrow Delete.

How to Sort Bookmarks in Google Chrome by Name?

Sorting Chrome bookmarks by name is the only option supported on Google Chrome software. Additionally, you can cluster your bookmarks into custom folders for easy tracing. Either way, you may not be satisfied since it does not help in managing your piling up list of bookmarks.

Sorting by name is only possible in every folder respectively but cannot be done collectively. Follow this short procedure to sort your Google Chrome bookmarks by name.

  • Open Chrome bookmarks manager by pressing the “Customize and control Google Chrome” at the top right of the window.
  • Select the Bookmarks option and on the dropdown menu, choose the option “Bookmarks Manager”.
  • Alternatively, you can use “Control + Shift + O” shortcut keys in Windows to open the Bookmarks Manager.

  • On the open tab is the list of your bookmarks either in folders or listed separately. Just next to the Bookmarks search bar, click the “Organize button”.
  • Select the “Sort by Name” option. You can add new bookmarks or folder and import or export your bookmarks from here.

To make this happen, add this script in the URL of a new bookmark:

In this case, download BetterTouchTool, open it and go to the Trackpad section. From the sidebar, click the + button and from the Applications folder select Google Chrome. Now it’s time to map the keyboard shortcuts you created to a trackpad gesture.

  1. Launch the Google Chrome Desktop browser.
  2. Click on Hover on the Bookmarks menu from the options. for more options and menu.

Chrome bookmarks make browsing extremely easy and accessible to all. If you use a website frequently, bookmarking it will save a lot of your time and effort. It has helped me a lot whenever I am too engrossed in researching and ant to refer to a particular website more than once.
