Removing Urine and Sweat Stains
Bedwetting happens plus sweat produces similar yellowish stains, and over time, it’s common for mattresses to become discolored and musty smelling from sweat.
Create a Cleaning Solution
Mix together 1 cup of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda, and just a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap. Stir until the baking soda dissolves.
Soak the Mattress
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle, and then spray the entire stained area of the mattress, letting the solution soak into the mark.
Let the Mattress Dry
Leave the solution to air dry for at least an hour. If you want to speed things up, set a blowing fan near the mattress, or use your blow dryer on the cool setting.
6. Air it out
Your mattress shouldn’t be overly damp no matter what treatment you have used, however, ensure it is completely dry before putting your clean mattress protector and bedding back on.
‘Airing out your mattress is beneficial in many ways. Not only does it allow any remaining moisture to dry out, but it exposes your mattress to the sun and fresh air,’ says Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design, Home Depot.
To air out your mattress, simply open a window so your mattress is hit with sunshine, or pick up your mattress and bring it outside. Doing this will eliminate bacteria and mold that may be present on your mattress. Plus, it will help alleviate or eliminate odor.
A bed free of germs and dust mites won’t trigger allergic reactions and disrupt sleep. A well-maintained mattress lasts longer, potentially saving you money because you don’t have to replace your mattress soon.
Clean a Dishwasher with Baking Soda
To remove buildup from the interior of your dishwasher, mix up this homemade spray. Combine 2 tablespoons baking soda and 16 ounces water in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 2 minutes. Carefully transfer to a spray bottle and spritz the inside of the machine before wiping clean with a microfiber cloth. Still have a smelly dishwasher? Try these tips for deodorizing a dishwasher.
1. Strip the bed
To start, remove your bed sheets and the mattress cover, putting both of these in the washer.
‘First and foremost, you’ll want to completely strip the bed and wash the sheets, pillowcases, and blankets,’ says Lauren Fountain, certified sleep science coach, Sleep Foundation.
‘Check the label on your pillows to see if they are machine washable. Ideally, you’ll want to wash bedding in hot water in order to get rid of dust mites, but it’s important to follow the recommended care instructions to avoid potential shrinkage or fading. We recommend washing sheets weekly to help keep your mattress clean.’
Today’s almost futuristic washing machines have a whole load of sophisticated and performance-based settings to ensure they clean your mattress and bedding with the utmost care.
Also, if you don’t have one, then it’s worth finding the best mattress protector for you. They say prevention is better than cure, so these will not only help extend the life of your mattress but they make cleaning easy as most can be thrown into the washing machine on a regular basis.
Spruce up your living room with bicarbonate of soda
You can clean everything from the carpets to the windows with bicarbonate of soda. Keep reading to find out how!
14. Clean dirty rugs and carpets

For the best results, leave the powder to settle overnight. Your carpet or rug should look brighter and smell good – a nice way to refresh your carpet naturally. Just think how much you could save instead of splashing out on expensive carpet treatments.
15. Shine silver ornaments and fittings
Combine three parts baking soda to one part water, mix and rub onto and into your silver with a clean cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly then dry with a clean cloth – they’ll be sparkling!
16. Make your own version of Febreze
Get your fabrics smelling amazing with this clever hack:
- Fill an empty spray bottle with 3/4 hot water.
- Add 4 tablespoons of Bicarbonate of Soda.
- Shake well and allow to cool a little.
- Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil.
- Once cooled completely, give it another shake to combine the ingredients, and then spray on clothes and soft furnishings.
17. Remove smells from a sofa
Over time your sofa may become a bit whiffy. Sprinkle some baking soda onto a dry sofa and let it sit for 10-20 minutes before hoovering or brushing off.

Why using baking soda and vinegar to clean your mattress works
Modern cleaners that are on the market these days are full of chemicals known to harm humans, why use something so chemical filled and dangerous to health when you could simply use vinegar and baking soda? Both items are consumable and won’t harm anyone while it gets the job of cleaning your mattress done!
Baking soda is cheap, non-toxic and its properties allow it to absorb moisture and odors easily. It helps remove the invisible organisms causing smells and stains by eliminating dirt, dust, sweat and dead skin cells. All things that you probably aren’t thinking about being in your mattress but unfortunately they are.
Vinegar is also inexpensive and kills bacteria and odors almost instantly. Combining the two of them makes a power cleaner that will destroy all of the unwanted mattress invaders.
The process to clean your mattress is actually pretty easy.
With vinegar and baking soda, how to apply these
Vinegar and baking soda are known as a good way to kick out of harsh stains on your mattress or you did not clean your bed in a long time. And they absolutely are common ingredients in our kitchens too! The first thing you can skip the concern of lacking the materials, isn’t it? Okay, now you are able to come to the clean process!
Vinegar and baking soda are great natural solutions
Things you should prepare
- Baking soda (about 16 ounces)
- Vinegar (approximately 2 teaspoons) or white vinegar
- A dryer or a fan
- Essential oils (clove, rosemary, caraway, tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, chamomile, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang). These are natural deodorizer that you do not waste lots of bucks to buy.
- Your vacuum cleaner (a medium-size machine is better as the suction power cannot damage your bed)
Step 1: You can rotate the mattress to prevent sagging issue (you enable to read further information in my related post – how to fix a sagging mattress). In this process, wash the mattress and bungle duvets or other feather beds with a dryer.
Step 2: Open a baking soda box and get around 20 drops to the essential oil in a holder.
Do not forget to close the box after that. Shake the holder until you see a new solvent. It is better to use a spray bottle. With the vinegar, you take 2 teaspoons only. And drop it as you do with the baking soda.
Step 3: Dredge this solvent around the surface you want to clean off. Then, you should spread and rub to help the bed absorb the solution. Wait for this working at least an hour.
Step 4: In the waiting time, you can clean the walls and the bed frame by a vacuuming because of the bedding debris. These will ensure a full clean in your sleeping area.
Step 5: After 1 hour, get your vacuum cleaner to remove the excess baking soda or vinegar.
Tips for Keeping Your Mattress Clean Longer
- At a minimum, you should clean the mattress every six months. However, if you have the time, clean it thoroughly every three months. If there’s a stain, treat it immediately to avoid setting.
- Change the sheets at least once a week to prevent dead skin—and its ramifications, such as dust mites—from building up on the bed.
- Invest in a mattress cover. This will protect moisture from getting into the mattress, which will help prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
- Regularly use a vacuum with a HEPA filter on the mattress to suck up dust mites, using the crevice tool to get into tight spots. To get rid of odors, sprinkle baking soda on the mattress first and let it sit for 10 minutes.
- Flip your mattress every three months. If it’s a pillowtop mattress, rotate it from top to bottom every six months.
