A quick way to change the formatting of pasted text is to click on the paste icon that becomes available at the bottom of the pasted text directly after pasting.

How to Cut and Paste in Windows 10

Cutting and pasting in Windows 10 basically follows the same process as copy and pasting. However, the difference is that cutting will remove the item from the source file or folder to your destination file or folder.

How to Cut and Paste in Windows 10 Using Keyboard Shortcuts

To cut and paste in Windows 10 using keyboard shortcuts, first select the item you want to cut from your source. Press Ctrl + X on your keyboard, then open the destination program or file path. Press Ctrl + V on your keyboard to paste the cut item. Check out the steps below for copying text, images, files, or folders.

  1. Select the item you want to cut.
  2. Press Ctrl + X on your keyboard. The cut text or image will disappear from your source. For files and folders, your selection will be grayed out.
  3. Go to the destination where you would like to paste the item.
  4. Press Ctrl + V on your keyboard. This will remove the image or text from the source and place it in the destination. For text, it will include the original formatting from the source.

To cut and paste in Windows 10 using a mouse, select the text, files, or folders you want to cut, then right-click with your mouse. Click on Cut from the menu, then go to your destination file or folder path. How to Copy and Paste in Windows 10 from Command Prompt

To enable copy-paste from the Command Prompt, open the app from the search bar then right-click at the top of the window. Click Properties, check the box for Use Ctrl+Shift+C/V as Copy/Paste, and hit OK.

  1. Click the magnifying glass icon in the bottom left corner of your screen.
  2. Then type “cmd”.
  3. Then click Open. You can also press Enter on your keyboard after the search results appear.
  4. Point your cursor at the top of the window. Point anywhere at the top white section of the Command Prompt window. 
  5. Right-click with your mouse.
  6. Then click Properties.
  7. Check the box for Use Ctrl+Shift+C/V as Copy/Paste. You will see this under the Options tab, which opens up by default.
  8. Select OK.
  9. Select the command you would like to copy.
  10. Press Ctrl + C on your keyboard.
  11. Go to Command Prompt.
  12. Press Ctrl + V on the command line.

Send Word document directly as an email body without copy/paste

Unfortunately, this command isn’t shown by defaultIf you carefully formatted a document in Word and want to send it as an email, don’t bother with copying and pasting the text in a new message in Outlook. You can directly send a Word document as an email body by using the “Send to Mail Recipient” command.

Unfortunately, this command isn’t shown by default but you can add it to the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) in Word. For instructions see; Send Word document as email body.

Copy and paste in a Linux GUI

Whether you’re using X11 or Wayland as your display server, the standard cut-and-paste methods should work as expected in your Linux window manager.

Copying text

Highlight the selectable text you want to copy, and press Ctrl+C.

Pasting text

Place the mouse cursor where you want to paste the text, then press Ctrl+V.

X11 native methods

If you’re using X11 without a window manager, highlight text (drag cursor with the left mouse button) to copy it to the clipboard. To paste, place the text cursor where you want to paste the text, then middle-click, or press Alt and left-click.
