How to Grip the Pull Up Bar
In general, you want to use a grip that you feel most comfortable with. There is no rule stating you have to use the Right or Left Grip. But you MUST use an Alternating grip. No other grip is authorized for the Leg Tuck.
Recommended Alt Grip for Leg Tucks
If you are left hand dominate (left arm is your strong arm) you use the Alternating Grip Left – where you left hand is closest to your face. (see picture below)
If you are right hand dominated (right arm is your strong arm) you use the Alternating Grip Right – where your right hand is closest to your face. (see picture below)

Step 1: Wear Your Pants, Socks, And Boots
Put on your pants and socks as you normally would. Try straightening out the fabric around the ankle part. If it goes beyond your ankle, fold it in the back to prevent your pants from bunching up when you stand up.
Finally, wear your pair of military boots as usual.
Step 2: Loosen Your Boots
Loosen your military boots a little to give room for your tactical pants to tuck in. Unzip your tactical boots if they have zippers, then remove the bow laces and loosen them. You don’t need to unlace all of the laces completely; otherwise, you’ll start from scratch and waste a lot of time.
Step 3: Tuck The Pants In Your Boots

Next, wear boots over your socks as you normally would. Zip or tie your shoes over your socks. Do it carefully to keep the folded pants tucked inside your socks securely. No one will notice how much cloth is skillfully hidden away within your military boots. How tight depends on your comfort level.
Method 3: Use Elastic Bands
When it’s cold, and you want to protect your feet and legs from freezing, using elastic bands is the best way to go. Here are the steps in using elastic bands to tuck your pants into your boots.
Step 1: Wear Your Pants, Socks, And Boots
Like you normally would, put on your pants. Next, wear your socks and make sure that they’re way above your boots to give extra protection.
Finally, wear your boots carefully. Zip or tie the laces tightly. Make sure to keep the crosses on the inside to protect the laces from snagging quickly and allow the sides to flex easily.
Step 2: Install The Elastic Blousing Strap
In one leg, lift the pants up to your knee to show the full boot and leg area. Put the first blousing strap around your exposed leg. You can put the strap above the boot opening, just below the calf.
Next, secure the strap using the Velcro or hook and loop closure.
Step 3: Tuck The Hem
Grasp the hem of your pant leg and fold it inward and upward beneath the strap. Doing so will fix the fabric between your skin and the strap. Remember not to over-tuck to give enough room to adjust the pant leg over your boot and sock.
Smooth the cloth around and under the strap using your fingers. Make some adjustments to make the tuck neat and comfortable.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other leg.

The military tuck is one shirt-tucking method that once you start using, you’ll never desert. There’s nothing worse (subjectively, of course) than when the fabric of your shirt begins to bunch up around the front, becoming loose and unsightly. This method eliminates that problem altogether.
- Tuck your shirt into your waistband, as you have been doing all these years, but rather than simply calling that a day and buttoning up, run your thumbs around the front to the sides of your waistband, smoothing any creases or bunching from the front of the shirt.
- Next, pinch the fabric at each side and fold it back on itself to create a fitted look, ensuring that your shirt’s placket lines up with the zip on your trousers. Finally, stand back and admire your handiwork in the mirror.
3. The Half Tuck
The half-tuck, as the name would suggest, involves having the front of your shirt tucked into your trousers, while the back hangs out loose. Yet despite rumors that this style is ‘approved’ by Ralph Lauren himself, the rest of us would probably be wise to give it a wide berth. Unless, of course, you want to come off looking like a university rugby player on a team night out.
- Loosely tuck the front of your shirt into your waistband.
- Shrug your shoulders to loosen up the look without untucking the front of your shirt.
- Smooth out any creases and ensure the rest of the shirt isn’t bunched up on the sides or the back, but rather hangs freely.
4. The Underwear Tuck
In spite of what the name suggests, the underwear tuck doesn’t involve stuffing your shirt into your underpants. It’s actually a layered tucking method that works nicely when there’s an undershirt involved.
- First, tuck the excess fabric at the bottom of the undershirt into your boxers or briefs. Once you’ve taken a moment to admire yourself in the mirror, put your shirt and trousers on and tuck your shirt in as you usually would.
- If you really want to take things to the next level you could opt for a military tuck on the final step.
5. The Jacket Tuck
A good, sharp-fitting jacket can hide a multitude of sins – one being a baggy shirt.
“If your shirt is quite full and you wear a jacket you can cheat a bit,” explains Emma Willis.“Pull the fullness back so it’s smooth at the front and hide the extra cloth at the back, under your jacket. Pull down well to tuck in.”
