How To Keep Spiders Out Of Your Home With Peppermint Oil

How Does Peppermint Oil Influence Spiders?

To make a splash of spider repellent, place about five drops of peppermint oil in a 16-ounce shower bottle. Fill the container with water, add an injection of dishwashing liquid, and shake the mixture well. Apply the shower around the entrances and windows, around the outside edge of the home, and in any matte corner where the spiders may be hiding. One will need to apply a spider repellent shower more regularly than ordinary insect sprays.

Try to apply once a week from the beginning. If the spiders return before the end of the week, try to splash water at regular intervals. Putting peppermint plants in essential places inside and outside the home can also help repel spiders. Likewise, one can try to spray peppermint leaves in places dominated by spiders from reaching the unwanted place.

How to get rid of poisonous spiders

The vast majority of spider species either won’t bite humans, or will only do so if threatened or picked up.

In the UK, three spider species can deliver a painful bite: the false black widow, the cellar spider, and the woodlouse spider. All three species tend to be shy and like woodpiles, dark attics and cupboards, or cracks in walls.

In other words, you’re very unlikely to be harmed by them, but if you do find one, handle with caution, wearing thick gloves.

In the US, three spider species are dangerous: the black widow, the brown recluse, and the hobo spider.

These will deliver a very painful, dangerous bite that can, in some cases, be lethal, so you must seek medical attention immediately if you’ve been bitten by one of these spider species.

All three tend to prefer living in piles of wood, cluttered attics, underneath patio furniture, and, occasionally, inside shoes. Do not attempt to handle these spiders, and call pest control if you have lots of them.

Why Peppermint Oil Repel Spiders?

Spiders hate peppermint oil. There are two reasons for it.

First, a strong odor from peppermint essential oil repels the spiders. Spiders hate the smell of peppermint.

Spiders avoid liquids that emit a strong odor.

Second, essential oils have monoterpenoids.

Monoterpenoids are a botanical fumigant that repels many bugs.

There’s scientific research to back the claim that peppermint oil repels spiders.

In a 2010 study, researchers have observed monoterpenoids have a repelling effect on spiders.

Another thesis researchers’ wrote concluded that peppermint oil is a viable preventive solution against arachnids, ants, earwigs, and crickets.

Instructions for Getting Rid of Spiders with Citrus

Spiders despise citrus fruits as much as vinegar. Having natural citrus products in a bowl on the kitchen counter is an incredible method for keeping spiders away (and strengthening the family’s smart diet). One can also rub extra citrus strips along the windowsills and doorways. To make the vinegar smell-less impactful, one can try to soak up a few orange strips in a cup of vinegar overnight. Add the mixed vinegar to a bath bottle mixed with water. It tends to be used as a cleaning specialist or watered in areas with high insect traffic.

Essential oil spray

While humans may find essential oils soothing, spiders feel quite the opposite.

Dilute essential oils with water for a fresh-scented spider spray.

Pour seven drops of your essential oil of choice into an empty 16oz glass spray bottle.

Boil water and leave it to cool – add it to the bottle while it is still warm, filling to within an inch from the top of the bottle.

How Often to Use Peppermint Oil for Spider?

For a DIY peppermint spray for spiders, you can mix a few drops of peppermint essential oil, water, and a small amount of dish soap. Mix the ingredients well and store it in a spray bottle.

Shake the mixture well before use and spray it in the areas where you think spiders may be hiding or where they frequently make their webs.

You can use this natural spider repellent once a week in the beginning. However, if you notice that the spiders are returning to your home frequently, you can use the spray more than once a week.

There is not a standard frequency to use it. Just keep observing the reaction of bugs to it in your house and adapt the ferequency accordingly.

How Long Does Peppermint Oil Smell Last?

After spraying, the peppermint oil smell lasts for two weeks.

During this period, you may observe spiders crawling out of their hiding and find a way to move out from your home.

Do not try to kill them by stomping on them or by spraying insecticide spray on them. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove them.

If there are no physical sightings of spiders in your home, then there can be two reasons. Either the spiders have quit your home, or they’ve moved into other places.

So, it’d be best if you use the spray again after two weeks where you think spiders can hide.

3. How to get rid of spiders using cinnamon

The following hack uses nothing but an ingredient you most likely already have in your kitchen: cinnamon. Yes: spiders hate the smell of cinnamon.

We’ll tell you outright what won’t work, though: cinnamon-scented candles. While they’re good for fragrancing your home, they don’t really work against spiders.

What you’ll need is proper, all-natural cinnamon sticks or quills that you use in cooking. Here’s how to use cinnamon to keep the critters well and truly away.

1. Position the sticks or quills strategically where spiders have been seen. This might be unpleasant if you don’t like them, but you’ll need to watch the spiders in your house to figure out where they’re coming in from.

2. If spiders have been nesting in your door or window frames, you’ll need some ground cinnamon, sprinkling some carefully into the gaps. You do need to be careful with white window frames, though, because cinnamon can stain – avoid any cinnamon getting on the outside of the window where it gets wet from the rain.

3. A couple of months; after that, the sticks and quills will start losing their natural scent. You don’t have to replace them immediately: see if the spiders come back (they probably won’t if it’s winter by then)

Tomato Leaves Garlic Ward Off Spiders

Another remedy for spiders, blending tomato leaves with water and cornstarch. Again, put in a spray bottle and spritz the spiders gone!

You can also use garlic and water combined. Think of them as vampires and you are Buffy. Slay away with natural repellent!

The Method for Using Peppermint Oil for Spiders

I followed the instructions that I’d heard about. All it takes is about 15-20 drops of peppermint essential oil in a spray bottle of water. I used 30, just to be sure. You can also put the essential oil directly on a few cotton balls and tuck those into corners and crannies that seem to be frequented by spiders. So quick! So easy! So delightfully Christmassy smelling!

Could this be the answer to my prayers? Does it really work? Can you use peppermint oil for spiders?

No. No it doesn’t.

I went around and de-spidered the whole area with my special de-spidering broom, then sprayed the whole area with the peppermint spray. Then I placed the cotton balls. Then I repeated all this 3 days in a row. The webs seemed to be getting worse and worse everyday! This area has a little roof, so it doesn’t get wet when it rains. So it wasn’t that the peppermint got washed away.

How to Use Peppermint Oil for Spiders? Try this Homemade Spider Repellent Recipe

Making your own spider repellent is an easy and inexpensive way to help keep spiders away from your home.

Directions:

Simply mix these two items together and place them in a spray bottle. You will need to shake this mixture frequently as you use it because the water and oil will separate.

Spray around windowsills, entryways, and anywhere else that you want to keep spiders away. You will need to reapply this mixture about every two weeks because the oils in the peppermint will lose their strength as they evaporate into the air and do their job.

Where to buy organic peppermint oil?

You can find peppermint oil in most natural health food stores. Plant Therapy is a high quality brand you can buy online. This essential oil is certified organic.
